Progress Pacific logoFlurry's report on mobile app usage in the US generated a huge buzz of activity last week, most of it declaring the death of the mobile web browser. Not so fast, says GigaOm's Colin Gibbs. Gibbs cites three reasons why:

  1. Native apps deliver more optimal user experience. Usually this includes links to web pages viewable in a browser, an experience that is completely familiar to users.
  2. Most websites are still not mobile friendly. Gibbs says Flurry blames poor mobile browser usage on "deteriorating" experience, but that the actual cause is that developers are still learning how to best design for mobile browsers.
  3. Web-friendly technologies are still improving. The need for developers to create different versions of their apps for each OS will soon disappear.
